Hailing from the English Premier League, a new goal scorer is descending into Nashville on Thursday to partner with Hany Mukhtar in 2023.

Nashville SC revealed Tuesday its signing of its third designated player, Sam Surridge, after completing a reported $6.5 million transfer fee from Nottingham Forrest FC. The 6-foot-3 striker scored three goals and two assists in 27 games for the EPL side during the 2022-23 season. Surridge scored 13 goals in the second-tier EFL Championship in 2021-22.

Surridge, 24, will join Nashville for the ongoing Leagues Cup, pending his receiving a P-1 visa. His contract is through the 2026 MLS season with a club option for 2027. Surridge now occupies Nashville’s final DP slot, or roster spots for players whose total salary and acquisition costs exceed the $651,250 maximum salary budget charge.

“Sam is an athletic striker who is clinical around the goal,” General Manager Mike Jacobs said in a club statement. “He fits our club DNA and has proven his ability to influence winning with his integral role in Nottingham Forest gaining promotion to the Premier League in 2022. We are excited about this next chapter of his career here in Nashville.”

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 01: Raphael Varane of Manchester United battles for possession with Sam Surridge of Nottingham Forest during the Carabao Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg match between Manchester United and Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on February 01, 2023 in Manchester, England.

Nashville has been linked with Surridge for two weeks, and he was reportedly spotted at the Nashville International Airport in June with Jacobs.

Surridge’s price tag is second to the club-record fee for Aké Loba, who signed with Nashville exactly two years ago for $6.8 million. Nashville loaned Loba to Mexico’s Mazatlán FC in January and terminated Loba’s contract in May.

Nashville’s new striker prepped at AFC Bournemouth, adding stops at Poole Town, Yeovil Town, and Oldham Athletic in lower-league English soccer before making his professional debut with Bournemouth in February 2019. He’s since played for Welsh club Swansea City as well as Stoke City and Nottingham.

Surridge was born 20 miles west of London, in the Berkshire town of Slough, the development headquarters of Mars Bars and the setting of 2001 British sitcom, The Office.
